The main characters in Midsomer Murders are the detectives who solve the murders. There have been two main detectives throughout the series:
– *Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby*, played by John Nettles, who was the main character from the start of the series until his retirement in 2011 ¹.
– *Detective Chief Inspector John Barnaby*, played by Neil Dudgeon, who replaced Tom Barnaby as the main character, starting from the 14th series ¹.
Both characters have had various sergeants to assist them in solving the murders, including:
– *DS Gavin Troy*, played by Daniel Casey
– *DS Dan Scott*, played by John Hopkins
– *DS Ben Jones*, played by Jason Hughes
– *DS Charlie Nelson*, played by Gwilym Lee
– *DS Jamie Winter*, played by Nick Hendrix ¹.
