UK tourists are on alert as Greece warns of the‘new reality’ in EU holiday hotspots due to the mounting threat of wildfires. The Greek islands have seen evacuations this week, with local authorities and residents bracing for the growing climate emergency.
Speaking to The Guardian, a resident shared their own harrowing experience: “We stayed until we thought we would melt, we did everything we could to save it.”
Another recounted the fierce fires, expressing how quickly damage can occur: “The winds were so fierce that when the flames arrived everything you see, all this destruction, happened like this. And then the wind must have changed because part of the garden survived, our cherry and fig trees over there survived, and nothing else in the neighbourhood was touched.”
